GS Gravel and Cyclocross Rides

Are you curious about taking your bike away from paved surfaces - and cars? With the recent explosion of cyclocross and gravel cycling, these disciplines are no longer considered fringe or niche. With a multitude of bikes, routes, and events to choose from, there has been a lot of interest and enthusiasm from GS members to take their bikes to the trails. If this piques your interest as well - read on!

GSX Email Forum

We’ve created a new Google forum, to connect all GS riders interested in cyclocross or gravel. If you’re interested in gravel rides, cyclocross skills practice, cyclocross racing, or just learning more - please contact Morgan (mcabot@glotmansimpsoncycling.ca) to be added to the Google groups forum. If you’ve been invited to the group (by Carmen Marin) then you’re already set!

Gravel Rides and Fondos

For our inaugural year of organized gravel rides, we will not have a set schedule in pace. Keep an eye on the GSX forum (see above) and the club ride calendar for rides. On many Saturdays there is a gravel ride leaving 4th and Alma at 7:35 AM—check the calendar to confirm. Or better yet organize a ride and invite the rest of the crew to join! We know there are lots of fantastic routes nearby - let’s pool our knowledge of all the great local trails.

There is no shortage of gravel fondos being organized a stone’s throw from Vancouver. Keep an eye out on our racing calendar (you can find it on the website here) to stay up to date on events to participate in. Here are a couple highlights where we’re anticipating a solid GS turn out:

Ride for Water, Chilliwack, May 5th

Cyclocross

Judging by the hoots and hollers at the kick-off party, cyclocross (CX) is clearly the most fun you can have racing your bike. Whether you’re totally new, looking to improve, or are a CX guru—join us for training rides, skill practice, racing and of course heckling. The core CX season happens in the fall, so keep an eye out for CX clinics and training kicking off at the end of summer.

Gear

For the most part, the adventures described above are not suitable for road bikes with slick tires. Cyclocross or gravel-specific bikes are best, you can also make a touring bike or drop bar commuter work if it has clearance for 33mm or wider knobby tires.

If you’re unsure whether or not your bike is suitable - jump on the forum and let our bike geeks chime in!
