August Club News: A reminder to stay safe on the road

Remember to ride safe and obey the rules of the road

Your jersey and shorts tans are coming in nicely, and while there are still many summer days of riding and basking in the sun ahead we would like to extend a friendly reminder for staying safe on the road.

  • All club rides and riders must obey the rules of the road. Respect red lights and stop signs.
  • Riding in a double paceline is acceptable where space allows. Single file is recommended for narrow lanes. 
  • Reduce speeds on roads with speed bumps, near rest stops, and parking lots. DO NOT stop on the road. Clear the road during any rest stops or mechanicals.
  • Groups on the Richmond Route will contain no more than 12 riders. Groups on the North Shore Route will contain no more than 8 riders, and ride in single paceline the entire route.
  • Listen to the instructions of your group rider. S/he is there to help navigate groups along the designated route, ensure individuals are riding in a safe manner, and facilitate any concerns.

The north shore group ride this Saturday will meet at the regular start location and ride time. Beginning September 3rd, the Richmond group ride will resume its regular start location and ride time at West 4th and Alma.

Online store for kit orders open August 29 - September 4

Place your Glotman•Simpson Cycling kit order from Monday, August 29 until midnight Sunday, September 4. Processed orders take approximately four weeks to arrive, will be exclusive to direct home shipping service only, and will incur a standard bulk shipping rate for all orders. The store will include some fall/winter selections and the cyclocross kit.

RBC Whistler Gran Fondo is coming up

A large contingent of our club members have already registered for the RBC GranFondo Whistleron September 10, 2016. For all of you participating, be sure to regularly check the GS Cycling Forum. Some individuals have expressed interest in riding back to Vancouver on the followingSunday, or carpooling. Connect with other members for all the details on the Gran Fondos group in the forum.

One month left to challenge your riding buddies

It is not too late to join the 2016 GSC Tour of Vancouver Strava Challenge! The challenge runs retroactive from May 1 to October 2, so if you join today you can still compete as all your Strava rides back to May 1 will still be included.

There is a little over one month left to chase PB’s and kick some butt. Now that all the less prestigious races are over you can focus on competing in the challenge to win some cool socks. There are two Strava segments on Cypress Mountain that count towards the GC and KOM (QOM), so if you participated in the Cypress Challenge your efforts will be included.

The 9th Annual Cypress Challenge sees record 750 participants!

On Sunday, August 14, 750 riders participated in the 2016 Cypress Challenge benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation. Thanks to the many participants, family, friends, supporters and sponsors, the event raised $400,000 to advance pancreatic cancer research! Over nine years, our total donations raised have surpassed $2 million!
