Ride and Remember this Saturday, November 19

Dear GSC members, sponsors and family,

On Sunday, November 6th, we heard and read about the tragic accident that occurred along River Road in Richmond. The outpouring of support from friends, cyclists and cycling clubs in the Lower Mainland (and I am sure from across BC and Canada) was heartwarming and supportive. On behalf of Glotman Simpson Cycling, I reached out to the Gastown Cycling Club early last week to provide our sincerest condolences and support during this difficult time.

I know this past week has been difficult for many GS riders. We are here to support you as well.

There have regrettably been some stories portraying this accident as another “us vs them”, or “drivers vs cyclists” encounter. From eyewitnesses and friends we believe this was nothing more than a tragic accident. On this note I would like to recognize and thank the many club members for their thoughtful comments and creative ideas and suggestions, as I believe this is what sets the GS standard so high. It is also one of the many ways Glotman Simpson Cycling can give back to the community.

Unfortunately, this accident is also a solemn reminder to all to “remain aware and stay safe when riding”. GS has organized our club rides with a “safety first” approach, something we will continue to mandate and enforce. As such we welcome any feedback or suggestions that can improve the GS club ride experience.

This past Friday, many racers participated in a moment of silence and support for the fallen rider, Brad Dean. And this coming Saturday, November 19, a memorial ride will take place. For those who are available, I encourage you to don your GS kit and join this ride as a show of support and solidarity for Brad and the other injured riders. As a suggestion we can meet at our usual Saturday starting point at 9am (Alma & 4th Ave) and together ride to Stanley Park for 10am to participate in the memorial ride.

I hope to see you next Saturday. Thank you and ride safe,

Michael Daerendinger
President, Glotman Simpson Cycling
