The 2014 Glotman•Simpson Cypress Challenge builds hope, awareness and critical funds for pancreatic cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency. You’ll be pedaling up Cypress Mountain, in this fun challenging event, open to everyone with a bike and a helmet!
Currently, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in B.C. and across the country. Most patients do not survive the first year post-diagnosis. Approximately 600 people in B.C. will be diagnosed this year, with less than 30 expected to survive five years. With few survivors to advocate and raise funds, events like the Cypress Challenge are important to help raise awareness and support vital research for pancreatic cancer.
A record-breaking 2013
The 2013 Cypress Challenge raised a record-breaking $400,000 to propel research initiatives with the most promise to improve the lives of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in British Columbia. Over the past six years, the Cypress Challenge has raised $780,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation in support of pancreatic cancer research in B.C.
This incredible event has built a strong momentum to transform the pancreatic cancer landscape here in our province, such as helping to establish Pancreas Centre BC in 2012, a dedicated research body focused on advancing care for people facing pancreatic cancer.
Where does the money go?
Funds raised through the Cypress Challenge have already enabled the Pancreas Centre BC team to lay groundwork for key research projects and establish three critical platforms:
- Pancreatic tumour registry
- Clinical trials unit
- Comprehensive library of DNA biomarkers to ensure success and find solutions for patients most in need.
Your efforts will continue to support a multi-institutional team of experts in cancer genomics, medical oncology, surgery, radiation oncology, and pathology to collaborate on translational research initiatives to discover the causes of pancreatic cancer and develop innovative therapy and early diagnosis techniques. These discoveries will lead to new services and techniques that will reduce suffering and improve patient survival.
The BC Cancer Foundation is the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency and the largest charitable funder of cancer research in this province. We support leading-edge research with the goal of finding solutions. 100% of the funds raised at Cypress Challenge go toward Pancreas Centre BC, to unlock the mysteries of the disease and save more lives.
