November Club News: GSX Season A Great Success

This October, the 2014 Shimano Canadian Cyclocross Championships were hosted in Winnipeg, MB and saw the nation’s best riders compete head to head on a grueling fast course. With both speed, and technical skill, Bob Welbourn bested his competition and coasted in the final stretch of the race to becoming the 2014 Canadian Cyclocross Masters (40-49) Champion. Earlier this year, Bob was also honoured at Cycling BC's 2014 Award Ceremony for Male Master Cyclist of the Year.

Congratulations also goes out to Devon Moonie, who competed in the Kona KupCyclocross Provincials in Nanaimo, BC. Devon finished 13th overall in the Elite Mens Category, and was the first U23 finisher to cross the line.

Don’t forget, our year end celebration is just around the corner. Join us on Saturday, November 15 for a full season round up of goodies, including an evening filled with music, videos, food and drinks, and lots of surprises and announcements.

Halloween was over by Saturday morning but the shenanigans continued Sunday with the annual Pumpkin Cross CX race in Maple Ridge. This is one of the highlights of the cross calendar and a personal highlight for me as it was the first CX race I ever did. GSX showed up in full force with strong performances and mass occupation of podium spots in many categories. If that wasn't enough we went ahead and took the inaugural top team spot of the day too!

It was at this race in 2012 that Bart Ludbrook and I stood with a coffee talking about banding together the many GSC club members that attended these races with a program of support. We simply wanted to give everyone that loved racing cyclocross, a crew to race and train with. I had no idea only two seasons later we would occupy almost every podium at the very race we decided to give GSX a go.

As the 2014 CX season in BC begins to wind down, this weekend's top team result was a great reminder of what has been built in just two seasons. GSX has been well received by many in the community and the support from GSC members and sponsors has been fantastic. GSX is now a staple at races in BC and Washington and we continue to attract new racers weekly. I think due in large part of our all-inclusive attitude towards anyone that wants to race with us, and having Ambassadors to support the squad like Ben Smith, Brandon Thomson and Bob Welbourn. I am constantly impressed by the talent of our squad, earning this season alone, 8 overall wins, 20 podium spots and 34 top tens! Most notably Bob Welbourn's 2014 Canadian National Masters Championship title just a couple of weeks ago.
If you want to join us in maybe taking a few more overall wins, the race season continues with Subaru Woodland Park GP this weekend in Seattle. All remaining races can be viewed on the events calendar.

As our club continues to grow, so does our petition for help from our fellow members in the 2015 season. We have a few unique opportunities in which we are seeking individuals to dedicate a small amount of time in an effort to making this club as successful and enjoyable as it has become. Some duties we are looking for assistance to help manage:

  • Coordinate special one day ride events (Mt. Baker, Sunshine Coast)
  • Coordinate recreational teams for fondos
  • Moderate the online web forum
  • Become a community liaison
  • Coordinate and execute activities for Cypress Challenge 2015

Please contact if you’re interested. Alternatively, as a commitment to our club members and local community, GS Cycling is continually open to partnering with local organizations and businesses. If you work for, own, or know of a company that may be interested in becoming a financial supporter of the club, please contact us for more information.

A wristwatch was found on the group ride, Saturday October 18. If you’re the owner, please contact Michael.
