Now is your chance in The Glotman•Simpson Cycling Club's ‘Cypress Challenge: Part Deux', starting at 9am on September 12th.
Climbing from the bottom of Cypress Mountain to the top of Hollyburn's Cross Country area, this is the second annual Cypress Challenge, a charity cycling race with a mass start open to all riders. But be warned - the 13km route has a steady 6.5% grade, and wouldn't be out of place as a hill climb in the Tour de France.
Entry is a minimum donation of $20, with all proceeds going to the BC Cancer Agency towards Pancreatic Cancer Research.
The Glotman•Simpson Cycling Club has a proud history of supporting this research group, and a cheque will be presented to the BC Cancer Foundation at a post-race party to celebrate the year's fundraising effort.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in North America. It affects both men and women. According to statistics from the National Cancer Institute of Canada, approximately 3,400 Canadians are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer yearly. In British Columbia, approximately 480 new cases are diagnosed each year. The mortality rate is virtually identical to the incidence rate with only 1-4% of pancreatic cancer patients survive at five years after diagnosis, which demonstrates the urgent need for more funding into pancreatic cancer research.
Eight different race age categories ensure lots of opportunities to wheel home some great prizes. And due to popular demand, 2009 sees the introduction of the Male & Female Clydesdale categories - for men +210lbs and women +160lbs. Scales will be available! MCL Motor Cars are sponsoring the event, donating prizing and providing an Aston Martin to fulfill the role of the lead car. And the first 100 riders to register will receive a limited edition shirt.
The Glotman•SimpsonCycling Club was created in 2005 by Glotman•Simpson Consulting Engineers and a group of friendly riders, and has grown to be one of Vancouver's largest cycling clubs, with over 115 members. Glotman•Simpson Cycling aims to be positive ambassadors for the sport, promoting a safe and fun environment for riders of all abilities, and a respectful approach to all other road users.
Registration is at 7.30am on the morning of the race at the bottom of Cypress Mountain, or you can pre-register on September 11th at the Glotman•Simpson offices, located at 1661 West 5th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V6J 1N5.
