race development SERIES - tactics and training: january-february, 2017

Dates: Every Saturday, January - February, 2017
Cost: FREE for 2017 members registered as Club Racer
Time: 9 AM - 12 PM
Location: Iona Road, Richmond

This six-week series will include coached training sessions with focus on team drills and race tactics, led by the Men's Race Ambassador Team. This series is ideal for all categories of racers, both men and women, and for those interested to start road and/or criterium racing.  Participants must hold a UCI or Citizens Race License, and should be comfortable riding in groups at a moderate to fast pace. PERFORMANCE SKILLS SERIES - HOW TO TRAIN: APRIL, 2017

Dates: April 16, 20 & 27, 2017
Cost: $100 (Registered club members only)
Time: 6 - 7 PM

This three-part series is aimed at cyclists that want to learn how to train for fitness, fastness, or a fondo. The clinic will help you to set goals, and build a training plan to achieve those goals. We'll take the theory to the road, and follow with a set of long and short interval exercises to incorporate into your training program.

Building a training plan
Don't just ride more, ride smarter. Developing a training plan to target your strengths and weaknesses is critical for improvement.

Long intervals
Understand the importance and effects of long interval exercises.  

Short intervals
Understand the benefits and effects of short interval exercises. 


Essential Skills clinics: APRIL - august, 2017

Dates: Monthly, April through August, 2017
Cost: FREE (and essential) for first-time registered club members
Time: 8:30 AM (2.5 hours)
Location: Cuppa Joe Coffee (Saturday group ride location)

In our continuing effort to help club members improve their cycling skill set,  the essential skills sessions aim to give you a helping hand if you are new to road riding, or want to further refine your skills as a cyclist. Clinics cover a broad array of essential road cycling skills to improve both the safety and quality of a group rides. Each session will have a maximum capacity of 12 riders.

Session 1
The basics of group riding: Bike handling, riding close to others (next to and drafting), and single pace line.

Session 2
The next steps: 2-up and off pace line, rotating pace line, pace management.

Session 3
It's group riding time!

PERFORMANCE SKILLS SERIES - learn TO race: may, 2017

"How do I try racing?" Taking the leap into competition can be intimidating for many. This two-part series will introduce advanced group riding skills, and how to apply those skills tactically in races. The first session will focus on racing etiquette, cornering, and basic team work. The second session will have you put those skills to work, at the Escape Velocity WTNC Race, with the guidance of a coach. This clinic is ideal for novice or Category 4 racers, interested in road and criterium racing.  Participants should be comfortable riding in groups at a moderate to fast pace.  


WOMEN'S PERFORMANCE SKILLS SERIES - LEARN TO ride: June, 2017

Dates: June 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th 2017
Cost: $75 ($100 for non-club members)

For women that want to develop their riding skills to the next level, this clinic will include 4 two hour group sessions, led by the Women's Race Ambassador Team with a combination of National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) accreditation, and extensive years of training, performance and competitive experience. The goal of the clinic will be to help women of novice and intermediate levels gain confidence on the bike, and acquire the skills needed for group riding situations, be it casual group rides, or gran fondos. 

Participants should be comfortable riding their bikes for two hours at a moderate pace. This is not only a great chance to meet and ride with the Women's Ambassadors, but also to accelerate your learning curve and get you to that next step in your cycling ability. 

Session 1
Pacelines: Learn how to ride in a paceline and techniques for group riding scenarios.

Session 2
Advanced pacelines, climbing and descending. Gain confidence and riding efficiency.

Session 3
Sprinting and cornering. Get comfortable riding in drops, out of the saddle, and leaning the bike.

Session 4
Injury prevention with West 4th Physio.

For women that want to develop race-specific cycling skills and ride strategies. This clinic will introduce advanced group riding skills and replicate race scenarios, in 4 two hour group sessions led by the Women's Race Ambassador Team with a combination of National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) accreditation, and extensive years of training, performance and competitive experience. This clinic is ideal for novice racers, riders interested in road racing, or advanced riders that want to accelerate their group riding skills.  Participants should be comfortable riding in groups at a moderate to fast pace.  

Whether you've just started racing, are thinking about racing, or just want to gain advanced skills of butt-kicking on the road, this clinic will help you achieve the knowledge and confidence to ride smarter and better.

Sprinting: Tactical know-how of attacking and chasing.

Performance Skills series - hills: june, 2017

This four-part series will benefit cyclists of all abilities whether you are new to cycling or a competitive racer. Training and pacing techniques will be reinforced briefly at the beginning of the ride before everyone heads up Cypress Mountain. Participants will run through drills and exercises along the way up and will receive feedback from the coaches on hand. 

Stretching and Injury Prevention Essentials
Learn about the importance of stretching and injury prevention as part of any cycling training program. These are critically important concepts for anyone looking to finish their first Gran Fondo or complete their first race.

Training and Nutrition
Learn the importance of having a time-effective training plan and how to properly fuel your body on and off the bike. Gain basic training plans and strategies for sticking to the plan when life gets busy. 

To the mountain!
Training techniques will be reinforced in two sessions on the road. Participants will run through drills and exercises and will receive feedback from the coaches on hand. 

This clinic is open to non-club members, however a general Cycling BC membership is required in order to participate. If you do not have a Cycling BC membership, you will be prompted to purchase one during registration.

Turn and burn! This year we will be hosting three cyclocross (CX) skills sessions

CX Fitness Training

The following skills sessions will focus on control at speed with some training principles and preparation for the racing season. These two hour skills clinics will include exercises with barriers, cornering, mounts/ dismounts, followed by some time riding the trails.
