World Tuesday Night Championships Awards
So after a perfect season of races at the WTNC (not a single rain-out), we've got a soaker on our hands for the awards night. Instead of hanging out at UBC and getting wet, we invite you to join us for a beer at the Coppertank at 3135 West Broadway. We're paying out top 3 (sorry, not 5, it's the top 3 only) in each category, so if you're in the money, come for your cheque and your picture with the trophy.
Congratulations to the following WTNC champions for 2010:
Cat 1-2 Men: Mike Sidic, Team HR Block
Cat 1-2-3 Women: Jasmin Glaesser, Team BC/Haywood
Cat 3 Men: Marc Perrot, Glotman Simpson
Cat 4 Men: Colin Rimes, Glotman Simpson
Cat 4 Women: Reno Tamasin, Glotman Simpson
Novice Men: Karl Kolbeck

Congratulations to Rob Britton of Bissell Pro Cycling and Jasmin Glaesser of Team BC for their Elite Men's and Women's provincial TT championship efforts. Rob cruised to victory on the windy 40km course with a time of 47:26 while Jasmin won with a time of 56:16.
Corrections, comments, and feedback can be sent to Stuart Lynne via the evinfo email address available on the contact us page.
teamcoastal: Monday ride starts at 6PM.
BCTT: Start times for Victorians, Bike-measuring guidance
BCTT! Yep, it's nearly the time of trial. A few more last-minute things.
If you are coming from Vancouver Island via ferry, and you pre-register, we can give you a later start time so you're not sprinting off the ferry. Mention it to us on the pre-reg form and we'll do what we can.
Bike measurementsHere are some guidelines on how your bike will be measured by the commissaires before you start:
-
Peak of seat must be 5cm or more behind bottom bracket
Aero bars must be horizontal, not tilted up
Front of aero bars (through spindle of gear shifters) must not be ahead of front wheel axle and must be no more than 75cm ahead of bottom bracket. 5cm tolerance will be allowed for morphological exceptions. In any event, front of knee must not be ahead of pedal spindle.
Ratio of long and short diameters of bicycle elements, excluding saddle, pedals, gear mechanisms shall be not more than 3:1 Use of padding to get bar "wings" to conform is OK.
These are general guidelines. The complete regulations governing road and TT bikes are in this document straight from the UCI [pdf]. If you think your bike may be questionable, please report to bike-measuring as early as possible. The measuring station will be at sign-on, in the Tradex parking lot, and opens at 0800.

BC TT: Sign-on at Tradex, Ride to start
So we're nearly ready for the BC TT Championships. Are you? One key detail: The sign-up tent will be in the Tradex parking lot. That is also where you can park, and they have nice, non porta-potty washrooms there. There will be NO on-course parking.
Tradex is about 3 km of easy riding to the start-finish. Here's the directions from Tradex to race start:

And since we're clearing up details, here's some more info: yes, you can do the TT on a tandem. We got this question, and while we can't guarantee you'll get a separate class, we'll definitely let you start and get a time. But if you're interested, we're pretty sure you'll have at least one competitor.
Another thing: please pay attention to the starter's instructions and the details regarding the start-finish turn around. Those of you riding the 40 km course (most of you) will be responsible for remembering that you turn around before the finish on your first lap, and ride straight through to the finish on your second lap. The details for the TTT and ITT are slightly different, so please check those [PDF] diagrams. We will try to keep track of which lap you are on, but it is your own responsibility to make the right turn at the right time. Don't be like Sven Kramer. Also, please respect the neutral no-passing zones at the turn-arounds: do NOT be the person who finds out how willing we are to disqualify violators!
teamcoastal: Watch for details for a Cypress ride this Sat Aug 28.
Two to go; One week; He walked away
No big news, but lots of little news. Let's do this.
Two WTNC races left, and only one for pointsThis week is the last race that counts for the year's WTNC standings, as we award trophies on August 31. In order to get you pumped, I'm embedding Jennifer Wolowic's tribute to WTNC, and it's way cooler than your club's bike video. Sorry to be harsh, but you know it's true. You owe it to yourself to watch it in HD fullscreen with the sound up.
(Fun fact: one of the on-bike cameras used for this video is currently on a helicopter, searching for Tyler Wright.)
SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!
I know, it's only the BC Time Trial Championships, not a World event like Tuesday Nighters, but there's jerseys and medals! Tune your position, taper after the Tuesday Nighter, and we'll see you in Abbotsford. One more reminder, but signing up for the Team Time Trial includes free entry for each rider into the ITT, is cheaper than registering four ITT riders, and is available through pre-registration ONLY. ITT entries can be registered day-of, but you can also pre-register, and you'll save up to $20.
And He Walked AwayTed, after organizing the Escape Velocity/Garneau Evolution Children's Hospital charity ride to Whistler and back, rode about 240 km with a group of stalwart and charitably minded teammates, and got pranged by a van near Horseshoe Bay with 10 to go.
His bike will never walk again, but Ted suffered cuts, bruising [update: and a cracked collarbone...] and a certain loss of faith in the ability of drivers to see things like a packs of brightly-colored cyclists. Seriously, our main kit colors are pink, red, and green. How do you miss that?
Other than that, the ride was a complete success. Er.
teamcoastal: Monday ride starts at 6:15 this week
BCTT - a note on youth age groups, plus WTNC video
We had a question regarding a U17 racer entering the Junior (18-19) category (because it's a championship category and a 40 km course). This and similar category changes are allowed if you get a letter of permission from Cycling BC (contact Richard Wooles, the provincial head coach).
Youth riders are normally allowed to use the gearing of the category they are entered in (rather than the gearing for their natural age), but contact Cycling BC for the complete details.
And with that out of the way, here's a very nice video from this year's WTNC races, courtesy Jeni, the resident EV auteur. Watch it in HD, IF YOU DARE!

BCTT: Register now. From your home. While wearing your pajamas
UPDATE: Per UCI rules, Junior Women will race the 20 km course; our website previously said otherwise.
Online registration for the Team Time Trial and the Individual Time Trial is now open. Isn't living in the future great?*
A few fussy details: aside from saving money, registration for the TTT is ONLINE ONLY. Also, signing up for the team event gives each rider on the team a free entry on the ITT side. So that's like getting two races for the price of one. Because if 40 km of painful truth is good, then 80 km of painful truth must be twice as good!
As usual, complete details are on the BCTT page, and we commend it to you.
*Note to U17 riders: please ignore the Web Nerd. He doesn't realize that for you, ubiquitous web access is something you've had for your entire life, so it feels like "the present," not "the future." He's just thinking about the pedicab driver from two weeks ago who asked him if he liked "old rock," and then played Pearl Jam's "Jeremy." That hurt.
BCTT: August 29 in Abbotsford!
BC's truthiest race is back on the schedule, and we'll be recycling the Warp Speed course in a 2-lap format, which will allow for a 40 km course in most categories. August 29th, Townline Road.
We are also running a provincial championship TTT this year, and note that while you MUST pre-register your team, you can enter the TTT and the ITT for one low price.
EV's Minister of Truth, Stuart, would like you to pay special attention to the turnaround rules: there will be a neutral, no-passing zone at each turnaround. Please check out the BC TT page for complete info on this and other details. Online pre-registration will be available soon.
So if you can handle the truth, see you there!
